Geography, History & Science
Geography
Geography tuition includes studies of the local environment, comparisons of different local habitats through to studies of Europe and beyond. Children learn to make and to understand maps, beginning with fantasy maps of fairytale lands or treasure islands, through to maps of Britain, Europe and the World. The weather is studied and daily records kept. Children in Year 1 learn how to measure rainfall, temperature, wind speed and direction. Year 2 study conservation and ecology and compare different types of local habitats through field trips and surveys, leading to pupil-lead projects.
History
History is covered in topic work through studies of our own recent history, such as family time lines in Reception, looking at changes such as old and new toys in Year 1, to studies of the Second World War in Year 2, where work is brought to life by the use of real artefacts and actual accounts from grandparents who experienced the war. The Romans, Tudor times, Celts and Barbarians and the ancient Egyptians are studied by Years 1 and 2 and include trips to historic sites.
Science
All aspects of the National Curriculum are covered through topic work, involving practical experimentation and reasoning skills. The school grounds and visits to parks or woodland are used to give children first-hand experience of studying wildlife and minibeasts. Topics in Reception include the study of Colour, Shape, Size and Pattern, Pets, The Farm, Mini-Beasts, My Senses, Growing and Food. Topics in Years 1, 2 and 3 include Myself / The Human Body, Light, Fire, Water, Materials, Forces, Transport, Houses, Fruit and Seeds, Weather, Healthy Eating, Space, and Living Things and Habitats. Cookery is a weekly part of the curriculum. Children observe changes in materials, and are able to make and taste a wide range of foods.
