Humanities
History and geography are covered in topic work through studies of our own recent history, such as family time lines in Reception, looking at changes such as old and new toys in Year 1, to studies of the Second World War in Years 2 and 3, where work is brought to life by the use of real artefacts and actual accounts from grandparents who experienced the war. The Romans, Tudor times, Celts and Barbarians and the ancient Egyptians are studied by Years 2 and 3 and include trips to historic sites.
Geography work includes studies of the local environment, comparisons of different local habitats through to studies of Europe and beyond. Children learn to make and to understand maps, beginning with fantasy maps of fairytale lands or treasure islands, through to maps of Britain, Europe and the World. The weather is studied and daily records kept. Children in Year 2 learn how to measure rainfall, temperature, wind speed and direction. Year 3 study conservation and ecology and compare different types of local habitats through field trips and surveys, leading to pupil-lead projects.
Personal, Social and Health Education
Glenhurst School has a structured programme of Personal, Social and Health Education that is delivered by class teachers during Circle Time, and through assemblies. The school promotes good citizenship and has strong links with the local community, including regular visits from the Police and Fire Services and other people related to topics being studied. The school has links with a local retirement home which children in the top class visit at Harvest and Christmas times, bringing gifts and performing festive songs and music.
Religious Education
Religious Education forms an integral part of education at Glenhurst School through personal and social development and regular assemblies, which are mainly traditional with a Christian ethos. Children learn to respect other religions and cultures through the use of stories and celebration of appropriate festivals such as Divali and Hannukah. The Christmas Carol Service takes place in a local church. We also have visiting speakers from time to time.
Links with the Local Community
Glenhurst has strong links with the local community
of Havant. The school supports both the United Reformed Church,
where our Carol Service takes place and St. Faith's Church
where we attend the Christingle Service and other appropriate
events.
Glenhurst also supports the Havant Town Christmas Parade and has links with Orchard House retirement home, where Harvest gifts are taken. Groups of children usually visit with their teacher twice a year to sing, play recorders or recite poems to entertain the residents. We also have strong links with the Fire Brigade, the Police and with the Mayor of Havant, whose regular visits are always very popular .
The Ballet School is open to all children in the local community on Saturday mornings. Glenhurst School also provides a Spanish Club for children and adults in the wider community. This takes place on Tuesdays, from 3.45pm until 4.15pm.
The Nursery building is available to hire to groups and clubs in the evenings and at weekends. Please contact the School Office for further information.
