Literacy
Literacy is taught with regard to the Literacy Strategy, and through the use of the Literacy Hour. This includes an oral starter, some form of written work, and a plenary session where children are able to share the work they have done, ask and answer questions and celebrate achievements.
Reading
Children are heard to read individually at Glenhurst School every day. The main reading scheme used is the Heinemann Story World and Discovery World series. The Jolly Phonics scheme is used to teach sounds in the Reception class, and is used as an aid to teaching blends and di-graphs in Years 1 and 2. A variety of other suitable material is also used, including fiction and non-fiction by well-known authors. Other methods include Big Books for whole class teaching, computer software and daily sessions using the interactive whiteboard. We run a weekly lending library.
Speaking and Listening
Children listen to a wide range of stories and poems. They have a chance to tell individual news and join in with group discussions on topic work. Oral work using Big Books forms an integral part of the daily Literacy Hour, and work is read aloud in the plenary session. Each child has a chance to take part in regular class assemblies and drama work.
Written Language
Children learn to write for a variety of purposes, including creative writing, comprehension, factual writing, lists, letters and poems. Phonic work, grammar and spelling, including regular tests for the older children, are a feature of the curriculum. Children are taught semi-cursive hand writing throughout the school, and learn to join their writing by Year 2. Children in Years 2 and 3 are prepared for entrance examinations to their chosen Junior schools if appropriate.
