Numeracy
This is planned and taught with regard to the Numeracy Strategy. Mental maths is a regular feature of lessons throughout the school. Numeracy sessions begin with oral and practical class discussions. Children in Years 2 and 3 learn their tables by heart and are awarded a special Tables Badge when they know them all.
The New Heinemann maths scheme is used throughout the school, which includes all forms of calculation, weighing, measuring, time, shape and data handling. Practical maths, games and problem solving also feature prominently in our work. Maths also forms an integral part of some topic work. Computer software and the interactive whiteboard are used to reinforce or extend mathematical reasoning.
Science
All aspects of the National Curriculum are covered through topic work, involving practical experimentation and reasoning skills. The school grounds and visits to parks or woodland are used to give children first-hand experience of studying wildlife and minibeasts.
Topics in Reception include the study of Colour, Shape, Size and Pattern, Pets, The Farm, Mini-Beasts, My Senses, Growing and Food. Topics in Years 1, 2 and 3 include Myself / The Human Body, Light, Fire, Water, Materials, Forces, Transport, Houses, Fruit and Seeds, Weather, Healthy Eating, Space, and Living Things and Habitats.
Cookery
Cookery is also a regular part of the curriculum. Children
observe changes in materials, and are able to make and taste
a wide range of foods from many different cultures, including
those used in special celebrations.
The children learn to grow their own vegetables in the school garden, to tend them and measure growth. They learn about where food comes from, and how to produce healthy and nutritious food from raw ingredients.
