Meals form an integral part of the day, when children learn not only good table manners, but have time to socialise with their peers in a relaxed, supervised atmosphere. Children are provided with utensils which are appropriate for their ages. Glenhurst School has a Healthy Eating Policy and teaches all children about the importance of hygiene, eating healthy meals and taking regular exercise as part of a balanced life style. It is our policy to provide nutritious food at all meals and snacks, avoiding large quantities of fat, sugar, salt and artificial additives, preservatives and colouring, ensuring children receive only food and drink consistent with their dietary needs and their parents’ wishes.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served between 8.00 and 8.30am and includes a choice of healthy cereals with milk, toast, and milk or juice to drink (or water if preferred).
Mid-Morning Snack
Parents are requested to provide their child with a small, healthy mid-morning snack in a named box. The children are also given milk to drink (or water if preferred).
Lunch
Lunch is served at 12.30pm. Nutritious, well-balanced hot meals are planned and prepared by our cook on the premises. All potato dishes and vegetables are fresh, with the exception of frozen peas and sweetcorn. Cakes and puddings are freshly baked to our daily requirements and contain no additives or preservatives. Fruit or yoghurts are always available as an option. We ensure that the food is varied, nutritious and suitable for healthy child development. Water or milk is given to drink.
Mid-Afternoon Snack
A small snack and a choice of milk, water or fruit squash is provided at 3.30pm.
Tea
A cold or light tea is served at 4.30pm, freshly prepared on the premises. Water or milk is given to drink.
Weekly lunch menus are displayed for your information on the parents' notice board. There is always a Vegetarian choice and we are happy to cater for all restricted diets. We welcome fresh ideas at any time, and menus may be changed if we find that a certain combination is not working.
Fresh drinking water is always readily available in School and children are encouraged to have plenty to drink, especially in hot weather or after vigorous exercise. We inform the children about how to help themselves to water and that they can also ask for water at any time of the day. You are welcome to bring in a named water bottle for your child if you wish. |
