Meals form an integral part of the day, when children learn not only good table manners, but have time to socialise with their peers in a relaxed, supervised atmosphere. Children are provided with utensils which are appropriate for their ages and stages of development. Glenhurst Nursery and Pre-School has a Healthy Eating & Fitness Policy and teaches all children about the importance of hygiene, eating healthy meals and taking regular exercise as part of a balanced life style. It is our policy to provide nutritious food at all meals and snack times without the use of large quantities of fat, sugar, salt, artificial additives, preservatives and colouring, ensuring children receive only food and drink consistent with their dietary needs and their parents’ wishes.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served between 7.45am and 8.45am and includes a choice of healthy cereals, toast, and milk to drink (or water if preferred).
Snack Times - Mid-Morning and Mid-Afternoon
Parents are requested to provide their child with two healthy snacks per day, one piece for mid-morning snack time and one piece for mid-afternoon snack time. The snacks should be in a named box. The children are given milk to drink (or water if preferred).
Lunch
Lunch for children aged 0-2 is served at 11.30am, and lunch for 2-3 year olds is served at 12 noon, both in the Nursery building. Rising 3 and Pre-School lunch is also served at 12 noon in the main building. Nutritious, well-balanced hot meals are planned and prepared by our cook on the premises, and so there is not an option to bring packed lunches. All potato dishes and vegetables are fresh, with the exception of frozen peas and sweet corn. Cakes and puddings are freshly baked to our daily requirements and contain no additives, preservatives or colouring. Fruit or fromage frais are always available as an option. Meals are adapted as purees for the very youngest babies, ensuring that the food is varied, nutritious and suitable for various stages of teeth development. Water or milk is given to drink. The children are given plenty of time to eat in a relaxed, calm atmosphere.
Tea
A light tea such as beans on toast, pizza, sandwiches, fruit and cake is served at 4.00pm in the Nursery and at 4.30pm in the dining room for the older children. This meal is also freshly prepared on the premises, and water, fruit squash or milk is given to drink.
The weekly lunch menu is displayed for your information on the parents notice boards in the Nursery and in the main building, and it is also updated weekly on the website at www.glenhurstschool.co.uk. There is always a vegetarian choice and we are happy to cater for all restricted diets. We welcome fresh ideas from parents at any time, and we encourage all children to try a wide variety of foods.
Fresh drinking water is always readily available in the Nursery, Rising 3 Class and Pre-School and children are encouraged to have plenty to drink, especially in hot weather or after vigorous exercise. The children are shown how to help themselves to water and told that they can also ask for water at any time of the day. You are welcome to bring in a named water bottle for your child if you wish.
Parents are requested not to allow children to bring chocolate, crisps, sweets, fruit shoot type drinks or fizzy drinks in at any time. |
