Welcome to Glenhurst School
We welcome children from Reception age (4½ to 5 years) up to Year 3 (8 to 9 years). We are open for 50 weeks of the year, which includes three educational terms per school year. As we are open year round, school children may access before and after school care and holiday club.
Glenhurst School covers all aspects required by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum covers the period from birth until the end of a child’s Reception Year, and focuses on four areas of a child’s early development:
- A Unique Child
- Positive Relationships
- Enabling Environments
- Learning and Development
Full details of these four areas of a child’s early development can be found on our Nursery EYFSC page.
The fourth area, Learning and Development, covers a further six areas of learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
Full details of these six areas of learning and development can be found on our Pre-School EYFSC page.
The National Curriculum is divided into the core subjects of:
- English, Mathematics, Information Communication Technology (I.C.T.) and
Religious Education (R.E.)
and the foundation subjects of:
- Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Science and Personal, Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E).
These subjects form the statutory curriculum, and our planning ensures comprehensive coverage. Many subjects are taught through a cross-curricular topic based approach. Where appropriate there is subject specific teaching. Teachers plan work together to ensure equality of opportunities, continuity and progression. Glenhurst School also gives children the opportunity to learn French, teaches swimming, music and recorders and provides visits and outings to the theatre, concerts, museums, historical sites and places of interest relevant to each class’s topic work. There are specialist peripatetic teachers for music including individual piano lessons, French, I.C.T and speech and drama.
Please see the School Curriculum page for full details of the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects. |
